T. Taylor Warren Named Second-Quarter Winner of
NMPA Pocono Spirit Award
Long-time NASCAR photographer T. Taylor Warren has been named the second quarter recipient of the National Motorsports Press Association Pocono Spirit Award.
Warren was recognized for a lifetime of achievement in NASCAR photography. Among his myriad accomplishments in the sport was his photograph of the finish of the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959. Initially, officials declared Johnny Beauchamp the winner. However, once Warren developed his photos it was clear that Lee Petty beat Beauchamp. After three days of investigation by a number of officials and additional photographic evidence, NASCAR officially declared Lee Petty to be the winner.
In 2006, the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Alabama, honored Warren with the Henry T. McLemore Award for achievement in journalism. Previously, this award had only been given to writers and broadcasters.
The NMPA Pocono Spirit Award is designed to recognize character and achievement in the face of adversity, sportsmanship and contributions to motorsports. Each year, quarterly winners are selected, and an overall winner is selected by a vote of the NMPA membership. The 2008 overall winner will be announced during the NMPA's annual convention and awards ceremony in January 2009.
Also receiving votes in the second quarter were Tony Stewart and Elliott and Hermie Sadler.
NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Juan Pablo Montoya was the first-quarter winner.
