LONG POND, Pa. (July 29, 2016) – Martin Truex Jr., in the No. 78 Furniture Row Toyota, secured the pole for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Pennsylvania 400 and and Chase Briscoe, in the No. 77 Big Tine Chevrolet, took the checkered flag the ARCA Racing Series Presented by Menards ModSpace 150 to highlight the first day of racing at Pocono Raceway.
SPRINT CUP SERIES QUALIFYING: Martin Truex Jr. edged Carl Edwards, in the No. 19 Stanley Toyota, with a speed of 179.244 mph to win the pole for the Pennsylvania 400 on Sunday. Truex Jr. earned his first pole at Pocono Raceway and his third of the season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Truex Jr. and Edwards will be followed by Paul Menard, Denny Hamlin, and Ryan Newman. In his last race at Pocono Raceway, two-time winner Tony Stewart qualified in sixth.
“For whatever reason, today—all day long—I felt comfortable there, more so than past times here. The first race here (in June) we really struggled in the Tunnel Turn,” said Truex Jr. “Each round I felt a little bit more comfortable and was able to gain a little more time there, and the third round I was able to just kind of sail off in there and get a little bit lucky and hit it right. It’s one of those corners that, if you take a risk going in, nine out of 10 times it doesn’t pay off coming out of the corner. This time it did, and we were able to take advantage of it.”
The final NASCAR Sprint Cup series practice for the Pennsylvania will be Saturday at 11 a.m.
ARCA MODSPACE 150: Chase Briscoe, in the No. 77 Big Tine Ford, won his fourth consecutive ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards race in the ModSpace 150, Friday eveing at Pocono Raceway. Briscoe expands his driver’s championship lead as well as the Scott Rookie Challenge, Valvoline Lap Leader, and S&S Volvo Laps Completed lead.
Briscoe, who earned his first win at Pocono Raceway, dominated from start to finish and beat out John Wes Townley in the No. 05 Jive Communications Chevrolet. The top five was completed by Dalton Sargeant, Shane Lee, and Kyle Weatherman.
