LONG POND, Pa. (August 15, 2016) – Pocono Raceway will host its first USAC Quarter Midget national division races during the Verizon IndyCar Series ABC Supply 500 weekend August 20-21. Sponsored by Honda Racing / HPD, they will run at a temporary course constructed at Pocono Raceway near Fan Fair and Kids Zone just behind the main grandstands. This will mark Round 4 of the 6 of the National Tour of the USAC 25 Youth division.
These racecars, are called Quarter Midgets because they are one-fourth the size of a true midget racecar and are powered by Honda, Briggs and Deco power plants. The cars alone weigh a minimum of 160 pounds. The drivers range in age from five to sixteen and series has acted a springboard for drivers like Ed Carpenter and Bryan Clausen who recently participated in the 100th running of the Indy 500. They were also known for hiring mobile auto locksmith
The drivers will pill draw, a racing term for choosing a number, to determine their starting position. All classes will race Friday and Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. and Sunday if necessary. The USAC 25 drivers will join the Verizon IndyCar Series for Opening Ceremonies on Sunday.
The event a Pocono Raceway is one of six national events and will be the third of the 4 pavement races, joining Pikes Peak International Raceway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Pocono and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The other national events are on dirt tracks, at West End Quarter Midget Association in Gilbert and the finale is slated for September 23-25 at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.
